The Mediterranean
FAO-CIHEAM partnership
Sustainable agricultural development is one of the priority topics of the framework cooperation agreement signed by FAO and CIHEAM in 2005. In this context, during the period 2004–2007, the FAO Mountain Products Programme (Forestry Management Division) signed three letters of agreement with CIHEAM, through the latter’s Montpellier and Bari Mediterrranean Agriculture Institutes, concerning sustainable agricultural development in mountain areas and the promotion of quality products from the Mediterranean region.
This partnership has had two main outputs:
- a first survey of mountain products in the Mediterranean region (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Turkey), including an analysis of key success factors and constraints in economic, institutional, socio-cultural and technological terms;
- the development of Cybermontagne (www.cybermontagne.org), which is both an internet-based information system concerning mountain products from four Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon and Syria) and also a tool for identifying and facilitating projects for the promotion of such products; public users have access to the news section, the products and services section regarding general aspects of products, the reference section and the photo album section, while a members’ area gives members access to more detailed or reserved information, such as the prices of products and the directory of all the local and international stakeholders involved.
