Direction Générale de l’Agriculture de la Commission Européenne

The European Union is home to a large number of geographical indications for agriculture products, foodstuffs, wines and spirits. In 1992 it first created common system for geographical indications: they are built upon a tradition in many Member States of valorising the cultural identity of its peoples and regions and supporting rural communities adding value to local produce. International Center for Advanced Mediteranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM)
Founded in 1962 on the joint initiative of the OECD and the Council of Europe, the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising thirteen member countries from the Mediterranean Basin (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey). OriGIn Organization for an International Geographical Indications Network
oriGIn is an international network of geographical indications’ producers launched in Geneva in 2003 as a non-governmental organization, oriGIn represents today some 80 organisations and two-million producers from more than 30 countries (both developed and developing countries are represented within the organisation). oriGIn’s objectives are: advocating for the establishment of an effective international system of protection for GIs; and promoting GIs as a tool of sustainable development for local producers and communities. www.origin-gi.com

Strengthening INternational Research on Geographical Indications (SINER-GI) is a EU funded research project (2005-2008). It aims to build and share a coherent knowledge basis, regarding economic, legal, institutional and socio-cultural conditions of success of Geographical Indications, in order to support their legitimacy in the framework of WTO negotiations. www.origin-food.org

CIRAD
Cirad is the French research centre specializing in tropical and mediterranean agriculture. He leads researches and expertises, and collaborates with many countries for the development of geographical indications : South Africa, Brazil, Indonesia, Tunisia, Morocco, French-speaking Africa (OAPI), Laos, Vietnam… One of its unit, the most active in the GI field (Joint research unit Innovation), organizes every year an international training session about « Geographical indications and rural development ».

RESSOURCES DES TERROIRS
'Terroirs resources - Cultures, Customs and Societies' (CNRS, French National Centre for Scientific Research, and the French National Natural History Museum). The research deals with the ethnological dimension of local agricultural products and foodstuffs, with emphasis on the cultural characteristics that make such products special, focusing on the knowledge, practices and symbolism employed in their production, conservation and usage.
